- Date: Sunday 7 June 2026
- Venue: Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra
- Permit Status: World Athletics World Ranking meet, performances achieved can be used to qualify for the Australian Athletics Championships.
- Events Contested World Ranking: All race walking events 5km and longer
- Events Contested Australian Athletics permit: U10 1km, U12 2km, U14 2km, U 16 3km and Masters/Fitness Walks - Subject to change
Event Overview
The 2026 Capital Athletics Road Walking Championships will be conducted within the 59th Race Walk Australia LBG Walking Carnival, hosted by ACT Race & Fitness Walking Club.
The carnival incorporates the Australian Marathon Race Walking Championships, where winners will be crowned National Champions, with athletes competing for both Australian Athletics and Race Walking Federation medals. Within the same program, Capital Athletics registered athletes will also contest the Capital Athletics Road Walking Championships across the relevant events.
All race walking events 5km and longer are World Ranking events, providing international ranking opportunities for eligible athletes.
Events are conducted on a certified 1km criterium circuit at Stromlo Forest Park, providing excellent visibility for athletes and spectators.
Event Program
Morning Session
- 7:30am – Open Marathon (Australian Marathon Race Walking Championships)
- 7:30am – Open Half Marathon
- 11:30am – Under 20 Men’s and Women’s 10km
- 11:30am – Masters / Fitness Men’s and Women’s 10km
Afternoon Session
- 1:00pm – Under 10 Boys and Girls 1km
- 1:15pm – Under 12 Boys and Girls 2km
- 1:40pm – Under 14 Boys and Girls 2km
- 2:00pm – Under 16 Men’s and Women’s 3km
- 2:30pm – Under 18 Men’s and Women’s 5km
- 3:20pm – Open Men’s and Women’s 5km
- 3:20pm – Under 20 Men’s and Women’s 5km
Presentation ceremonies will be conducted throughout the afternoon.
Championship Events
Capital Athletics Road Walking Championship medals will be awarded in the following events:
- Under 10 – 1km
- Under 12 – 2km
- Under 14 – 2km
- Under 16 – 3km
- Under 18 – 5km
- Under 20 - 5km
- Under 20 – 10km
- Open – 5km
- Open - Half Marathon
The Marathon is conducted as part of the Australian Marathon Race Walking Championships and will only be contested as a National Chamoionship.
Entry Information
- Entry: Capital Athletics athletes enter for the Capital Athletics Championship Events via this entry portal. All other competitors must complete an online entry via the VRWC online entry portal. https://www.revolutionise.com.au/vrwc/events/342804.
- Entries Close: Friday, 29 May 2026 at 6:00pm. Late entries will not be accepted.
- Entry Fees: Capital Athletics Championship events are $30 while the Australian Marathon Race Walking Championship are $50 and the Race Walking Australia events are $25. Athletes may enter up to three events.
- Eligibility: Athletes must be registered with Capital Athletics to contest the Capital Athletics Road Walking Championships, all other athletes must meet the elibiginity critera as specified in the LGB Walking Carnival 2026 Informaiton Pack.
- Age Eligibility: Age for all events is age at 31 December this year. Minimum age for participants in events exceeding 10km is 16 years.
Athlete Information
- Check-In Process: All athletes must check in for their event at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time at the designated check-in area.
- Uniform Requirements: Athletes must compete in their club uniform and wear their race numbers for all events. Athletes will be issued one set of race numbers (front and back) for use across all events during the carnival.
- World Rankings & Judging: All race walking events 5km and longer are World Athletics World Rankings Competition events and are judged under World Athletics race walking rules.
- Facilities: Toilets and showers are available on site, with spectator viewing areas around the circuit. A canteen will operate throughout the day offering BBQ and drinks, with coffee available from the Handlebar Café located adjacent to the car park.
- Parking & Access: Parking is available on site at Stromlo Forest Park, with a maximum charge of approximately $3.90, payable by card.
Saturday Development Sessions
Optional race walking development sessions will be held on Saturday 6 June at the Australian Institute of Sport, including coaching education, judging development and athlete technique masterclasses.
