Capital Athletics Technical Official Pathway

Technical Officials are vital to the success of Capital Athletics’ competitions, ensuring events are conducted fairly, safely, and enjoyably for all participants. Their expertise enables athletes to achieve qualifying performances for national events, supporting Capital Athletics’ commitment to delivering high-quality competitions that help athletes reach their goals. Volunteers are essential to this mission, and Capital Athletics welcomes individuals to join our community of Technical Officials.

Getting Started

Capital Athletics offers a clear pathway for individuals to become qualified Technical Officials in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Please note that the levels outlined below apply specifically to Capital Athletics competitions.

Eligibility Requirements

To become a Technical Official, individuals must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.

  • Hold a current Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) card.

  • Register as a qualified Technical Official upon completion of the required training (TBC) In the meantime, email confirmation to inclusion@capitalathletics.au

To achieve Starter level qualification, complete the following training options:

  1. Age Manager course completion. Click here to access: Capital Athletics Age Manager online training course
  2. Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) Registration. 
    Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants by obtaining your WWVP registration via Access Canberra: Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra
  3. Child Safeguarding Course:Learn best practices in safe sport by completing Sport Integrity Australia's Child Safeguarding Course: Child Safeguarding Course

Core (Level B) Technical Official Pathway

Take your officiating to the next level as a Core Official (Level B). This certification builds on the foundations by offering more in-depth knowledge, practical experience, and a critical role in supporting athletics competitions.

To achieve Core level qualification, complete the following training options:

  1. Age Manager course completion. Click here to access: Capital Athletics Age Manager online training course
  2. Complete a 20-question multiple-choice exam on the general principles of officiating, requiring a minimum pass rate of 80%. TBC
  3. At least one completed module on World Athletics 'Apprentice Level Referee' course. Click here to access (note you will have to create an account if haven't done so previously) : Learning | World Athletics

    OR

Attend a Capital Athletics-organised face-to-face training session covering officiating principles and event group knowledge.

 

Upon completion, submit your details to our database for final approval and certification.

Uniform is available for those who complete the centre/club level Technical Official course.

  • Name badge
